Cemeteries are always special, but in this case even more so. None other than the great Pieter Bruegel is buried in the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Kapellekerk. Be sure to come and salute the master.
Church of Our Lady of the Chapel
Valuable paintings are kept alongside magnificent apostle statues in the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Kapellekerk, the main church of a parish that counted many painters and tapestry workers amongst its inhabitants. In the 17th century this place of worship was the proud possessor of three paintings by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and his studio.
Christ Giving the Keys to Saint Peter
Rubens painted the original work around 1613-1615 at the request of his friend and colleague Jan Brueghel the Elder. The artwork was intended to decorate the memorial stone of his parents, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Maria Coecke van Aelst. That particular painting was sold in 1765 and replaced with a copy, at the buyer's expense. The copy can still be seen in the church
