Some churches contain so many art treasures that it is almost impossible to recommend a single one. The opulent Sint-Pieterskerk is a typical example of this. In addition to the impressive pulpit, there are paintings by David Teniers, Pieter van Lint and Jan Erasmus Quellinus. Definitely worth a detour.
Saint Peter’s Church
The monumental Sint-Pieterskerk is an unusually richly endowed church, the construction of which started around 1300 and took more than four centuries to complete. The Baroque furniture, including work by Walter Pompe, is particularly noteworthy. The carillon by Andreas Jozef Vanden Gheyn comprises 52 bells.
Pulpit with the Calling of the Apostles Peter and Andrew
In 1862 the Turnhout sculptor Hendrik Peeters-Divoort created a new pulpit for Sint-Pieterskerk. He drew inspiration from the naturalistic pulpit in the Sint-Andrieskerk in Antwerp. The natural scene perfectly camouflages the functional structure of the traditional pulpit. However, the fish in the Israelite fishing boat of the brothers Peter and Andrew seem to have arrived directly from the North Sea.
