Sint-Martinuskerk in Lierde is also one of the few places where you can find works of art by a female master in situ. Come and experience the unique scenes created by Elisabeth Seldron and see how she brought the narrative of Saint Bruno to life.
Saint Martin’s Church
A Carthusian priory, linked to a church, was located in Sint-Martens-Lierde from 1329. The church, which was given a new life as the parish church of Sint-Martinus in 1785, was rebuilt several times. A planned expansion of the single-nave church did not materialize. Many Rococo furnishings and works of art date from the 18th century.
Scenes from the Life of Saint Bruno
The six 18th century paintings on canvas are embedded into the colourful panelling. They depict scenes from the life of Saint Bruno, the founder of the Carthusian order, and from the Acts of the Apostles. The series starts with Bruno’s refusal to accept the bishop’s mitre from the pope. It was created by the Brussels based artist Elisabeth Seldron, who worked at the court of Archduchess Maria Elisabeth of Austria in Brussels.
