Reliquaries

Binnenzicht Sint-Janshospitaal met schrijn.
This Master Series is actually based on a two thousand-year-old tradition – the veneration of relics. Numerous churches and monasteries in Flanders are conserving an object or body part attributed to a saint.

Valuable relics such as these often prompted large numbers of people to set off on pilgrimages. The owners of the relics therefore spared no effort or expense to exhibit their relics in all their glory. That is why the shrines that came to house them are veritable gems of craftsmanship in their own right, and also why many of the artists involved sought to outdo themselves.

Variety reigns supreme in this Master Series. In Bruges and Borgloon, from Memling to the oldest panel paintings in Flanders, and from Petronella's skull to Odilia's bones – you'll discover from one surprise after another.
